Formatting your computer and reinstalling Windows can improve performance, fix system errors, and remove viruses or unwanted files. Follow this step-by-step guide to format your PC and install a fresh copy of Windows.
Requirements Before Formatting
✔ A bootable USB drive or DVD with Windows 7, 8, or 10.
✔ A backup of your important files (formatting erases everything).
✔ Your Windows product key (if required).
Step-by-Step Guide to Format & Install Windows
Step 1: Enter Boot Menu
- Insert the bootable USB or DVD into your computer.
- Restart your computer and immediately press the F12 key (or F2, F9, Esc, or Del, depending on your PC brand) to open the Boot Menu.
- From the Boot Manager, select your USB or DVD drive and press Enter.
Step 2: Start Windows Setup
- The Windows installation screen will appear.
- Select your language, time, and keyboard input method, then click Next.
- Click Install Now.
- If prompted, enter your Windows product key.
Step 3: Choose Installation Type
- Select Custom Installation (this allows you to format the drive).
- Locate the drive where Windows is currently installed (usually Drive C:).
- Click on the drive and choose Format to erase old files.
- Select the same drive for Windows installation and click Next.
Step 4: Installing Windows
- Windows will begin installing, which takes around 10–20 minutes depending on your system.
- Your computer may restart several times during the process—this is normal.
Step 5: Complete the Setup
- After installation, set up your user account, password, and preferences.
- Install drivers (graphics, Wi-Fi, sound) if needed.
- Update Windows and install your essential software (browser, antivirus, etc.).
